About Us<\/h1>

During the late 1960s and early 1970s, the Civil Rights, Black Consciousness, and the Black Social Work movements converged in the struggle for Black liberation.<\/p>

Black social workers organized across the country in major cities to address racism, poverty, the need for self determination and empowerment of the Black family and community. After the walkout by 400 Black social workers on May 29th, 1968, the National Association of Black Social Workers was formed to provide leadership and “a more consistent basis for unified action.” Actions were targeted at local, state, national, and international levels.<\/div>
\u00a0<\/div>
The Metropolitan D. C. Chapter hosted the Second National Conference of NABSW at Howard University from Feb. 21 – 23, 1970, sponsored by the Howard University School of Social Work and the Washington Urban League. The Chapter was led by John L. Clark, Chairman,Robert A. Keyes, Co- Chair, Viola Jefferson, Treasurer, and James Workman, National Steering Committee Member. After the Conference, the Chapter phased out. Under the leadership of Jay Chunn and James E. Craigen, the Chapter<\/a> was\u00a0reestablished in 1972 – 73, and has been actively engaged in the liberation struggle for\u00a0forty+ years.<\/div>

Our Mission<\/h3>

The National Association of Black Social Workers, Inc., comprised of people of African ancestry, is committed to enhancing the quality of life and empowering people of African ancestry through advocacy professional development or training, human services delivery, and research.\u00a0<\/p>

National Association of Black Social Workers, Inc. will work to create a world in which people of African ancestry will live free from racial domination, economic exploitation, and cultural oppression. In collaboration with national, international, and other appropriate groups, NABSW will continue to leverage its collective expertise to strategically develop the capacity of people of African ancestry to sustain and flourish. NABSW\u2019s vision is guided by the Principles of the Nguzo Saba, which are Unity, Self-determination, Collective Work and Responsibility, Cooperative Economics, Purpose, Creativity, and Faith, and the Seven Cardinal Virtues of Ma\u2019at, which are Right, Truth, Justice, Order, Reciprocity, Balance, and Harmony.\u00a0<\/p> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n <\/div>\n
