The Power of Connection: Advancing Black Social Work Practice in D.C.

In the demanding and vital field of social work, connection, shared knowledge, and dedicated advocacy are paramount. For Black social workers and those committed to serving the Black community, these elements take on even greater significance, addressing unique challenges and championing culturally specific approaches to care and empowerment. Recognizing this crucial need, the University of the District of Columbia (UDC) Social Work Student Association is proud to present an invaluable opportunity for students, professionals, and advocates alike.

On Monday, April 21st, 2025, join the UDC Social Work Student Association as they host the Mighty Metropolitan D.C. Chapter of the National Association of Black Social Workers (NABSW). This informative session, held from 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM in the Windows Lounge (Bldg. 38, 2nd Floor) on the UDC campus, promises an engaging look into an organization at the forefront of Black social work practice and advocacy.

Understanding the National Association of Black Social Workers (NABSW)

Founded during the crucible of the Civil Rights Movement, NABSW emerged from a need to address the specific concerns and systemic barriers faced by Black social workers and the communities they served. Established formally in 1968, the organization has grown into a powerful national voice, guided by principles of Black self-determination, community upliftment, and social justice. NABSW provides a critical platform for professional development, networking, policy advocacy, and the promotion of culturally competent social work models tailored to the strengths and needs of people of African ancestry.

The Mighty Metropolitan D.C. Chapter carries this legacy forward within the unique context of the nation’s capital. It serves as a vital hub for Black social workers in the region, offering support, fostering collaboration, and driving initiatives aimed at improving outcomes for Black individuals and families throughout the District and surrounding areas.
