The Power of Connection: Advancing Black Social Work Practice in D.C.

In the demanding and vital field of social work, connection, shared knowledge, and dedicated advocacy are paramount. For Black social workers and those committed to serving the Black community, these elements take on even greater significance, addressing unique challenges and championing culturally specific approaches to care and empowerment. Recognizing this crucial need, the University of the District of Columbia (UDC) Social Work Student Association is proud to present an invaluable opportunity for students, professionals, and advocates alike.

On Monday, April 21st, 2025, join the UDC Social Work Student Association as they host the Mighty Metropolitan D.C. Chapter of the National Association of Black Social Workers (NABSW). This informative session, held from 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM in the Windows Lounge (Bldg. 38, 2nd Floor) on the UDC campus, promises an engaging look into an organization at the forefront of Black social work practice and advocacy.

April 21st, UDC

Understanding the National Association of Black Social Workers (NABSW)

Founded during the crucible of the Civil Rights Movement, NABSW emerged from a need to address the specific concerns and systemic barriers faced by Black social workers and the communities they served. Established formally in 1968, the organization has grown into a powerful national voice, guided by principles of Black self-determination, community upliftment, and social justice. NABSW provides a critical platform for professional development, networking, policy advocacy, and the promotion of culturally competent social work models tailored to the strengths and needs of people of African ancestry.

The Mighty Metropolitan D.C. Chapter carries this legacy forward within the unique context of the nation’s capital. It serves as a vital hub for Black social workers in the region, offering support, fostering collaboration, and driving initiatives aimed at improving outcomes for Black individuals and families throughout the District and surrounding areas.

What to Expect at the UDC Event

This event, presented by UDC’s own Social Work Student Association, is more than just a meeting; it’s an invitation to engage and learn. Attendees will have the chance to delve deep into several key aspects of the ABSW D.C. Chapter:

  1. Mission Exploration: Understand the core values and objectives that drive the ABSW D.C. Chapter. Learn about their specific focus areas within the metropolitan region and how they translate the national mission into local action.
  2. Membership Benefits: Discover the tangible advantages of joining NABSW. This includes access to resources, professional development opportunities, mentorship programs, publications, and a supportive network of like-minded colleagues dedicated to shared goals.
  3. Networking Opportunities: Connect with current members of the ABSW D.C. Chapter, fellow students, UDC faculty, and potentially other social work professionals from the area. Building these relationships is essential for career growth, collaboration, and mutual support.
  4. Advancing Practice & Advocacy: Learn how you can actively participate in the chapter’s efforts. Find out how ABSW works to influence policy, promote equitable practices within social service agencies, and advocate for the well-being of the Black community. This is your chance to see how collective action makes a tangible difference.

Why This Event Matters

For social work students, particularly those at UDC, this event offers a direct line to a prestigious professional organization deeply rooted in the community. It’s an opportunity to see theory put into practice, understand the real-world application of social work principles within a specific cultural context, and begin building a professional network before graduation.

For practicing social workers and community advocates, it’s a chance to reconnect with the local ABSW chapter, learn about current initiatives, mentor emerging professionals, and contribute their expertise. It reinforces the sense of community and shared purpose that is vital for sustained impact and resilience in the field.

The focus on advancing Black social work practice and advocacy is particularly critical. It acknowledges the historical and ongoing systemic inequities that impact the Black community and highlights the importance of culturally specific, anti-racist approaches within the social work profession.
