A Symposium Exploring Health and Mental Health Solutions

Join us on Thursday June 17th and Friday June 18th for a symposium centering our Black Men. This event will focus on professionals in the field who work with effective modalities of treatment which enhances the health and mental health. Determinants of racial and social justice within our professions and domains of influence with African American men will be explored. There will also be a specific focus on community engagement, policy implications, ethics, LGBTQIA, relationships and fatherhood strategies. Registered participants will be eligible to receive 13 CEUs.

Social Justice Corner: The George Floyd Justice in Policing Act of 2020 – H.R. 7120

Abbreviation of the policy intentions:

  • Lowers the criminal intent standard—from willful to knowing or reckless—to convict a law enforcement officer for misconduct in a federal prosecution,
  • Limits qualified immunity as a defense to liability in a private civil action against a law enforcement officer or state correctional officer, and
  • Authorizes the Department of Justice to issue subpoenas in investigations of police departments for a pattern or practice of discrimination.

The NABSW Metro DC Chapter has provided three testimonies in the District of Columbia to advocate for social justice using testimony for the predominantly African American communities of Wards 7 & 8.

COVID-19 has required everyone to shift and adjust to a “new normal”. The shift was sudden, and didn’t allow any of us to truly prepare. Add to that–we are all uncertain about how long we will be in this space.

One way to manage is to be intentional about how we approach this adjustment. We will share strategies with you on two particular areas — navigating public spaces and transitioning to telework.

We are excited to bring our local conference back to keep our action-centered chapter focus going. This year’s conference theme is, “Wakanda Forever”. The movie, Black Panther sparked a positive uprising in the Black community and many topics were addressed (or not addressed) that hits home for our families. To keep the “Wakanda Forever” movement going, our conference will address topics such as:

  • Trauma
  • Couples Counseling
  • Clinical interventions
  • Ethics & more
  • Family Violence- African centered models
